The Falls and Annie get your pickle barrel

Here are my falls pictures from Friday.

Sunny drive down to Niagara. I was hoping for some rainbows over the falls like my friend Annie (no relation to the lady we'll discuss later) found in her beautiful pictures but had no luck there. Still it was a great day.

Henry dropped me off and I made my way along the falls. The crowds were not too bad. Only in a few spots did I need to wait a few seconds to get up to the rail.

The railing is one of my favourite parts of the falls.

Trust me to be as excited about a bird as anything else.

The birds are unconcerned about where they are perching.

A tractor for Lizzy:

Karen's family and some good friends went on the Hornblower yesterday! Hoping they'll let me share their pictures here.

These next pictures were me trying out the camera on my new iPod. I think it did pretty well.

This Annie Edsen Taylor.

She survived the falls in a pickle barrel with only minor cuts and bruises. Her husband was killed in the civil war and she couldn't make ends meet as a teacher. She got lots of media attention but her manager absconded with her pickle barrel, going around with a much younger woman, pretending it was her.

But first to prove to authorities that she had a good barrel system planned out they sent a cat over. Wikipedia says this is her posing with the cat twenty minutes after the cat came back [sans 8 1/2 lives.]

Apparently they pumped compressed air in with a bicycle pump and plugged the hole used for that with a cork.

She recounted the experience to reporters: ‘I prayed every second I was in the barrel except for a few seconds after the fall when I went unconscious. Nobody ought ever to do that again. If it was with my dying breath, I would caution anyone against attempting the feat. I would sooner walk up to the mouth of a cannon, knowing it was going to blow me to pieces than make another trip over the Fall.’

Indeed.

  1. I'm sorry you didn't see any rainbows Ruthe. I love these photos and it looks like you had a great day for it as well as I did.
